20 pupils from Year 8 were lucky enough to be invited to The Goldsmiths’ Centre in Farringdon, central London. The pupils were met by Chris Oliver (Head of Professional Training) , Kevin Wilson (Course Leader of the Foundation Programme) and Maggie Connolly. Chris and Kevin spoke to the pupils about the Goldsmiths’ Apprenticeship Scheme; a scheme in which you young people are employed and trained by a number of companies affiliated to the Goldsmiths’ Centre. They also discussed the Foundation Programme that is run at the Goldsmiths’ Centre. This programme is open to young people aged 16- 19 years of age. This is a free year long programme which provides course skills to begin working in jewellery, silversmithing and the allied industries. Young people on the course are taught by the UK’s leading craftspeople. Our pupils were given advice on how they could apply for the programme.
The pupils were then taken on a tour of the workshops, they got to speak with some young apprentices and also had the opportunity to design some of their own jewellery with Chris and Maggie’s assistance. They also got to see the current jewellery exhibition on show at the centre.
The staff at the Goldsmiths’ Centre commented on how creative our pupils are and also on how well behaved and friendly they were.
