Appeals

What you can appeal against

You can appeal against the outcomes of post-result services such as the clerical checks, review of marking and review of moderation.

You can use our appeals process for:

  1. Exam and non-exam assessment (NEA) results. You can only make an appeal if you’ve already requested and received the outcome of a review of marking or moderation review. Appeals should focus on whether an awarding body has:
  2. Malpractice decisions – when we have applied a malpractice penalty.
  3. Access arrangements and special consideration decisions – if we’ve declined your application or you disagree with the level of adjustment made.

How to appeal

Stage 1: preliminary stage

As per JCQ regulation, the appellant is the head of centre who submits the appeal on your behalf. You need to submit your appeal within 30 calendar days of receiving the outcome from us (or within 15 calendar days of receiving reasons for the outcome, if these are requested). We appreciate that you are likely to wish to review a copy of the script prior to deciding whether or not to submit an appeal application. If the awarding bodies processing the request for a script copy takes you beyond the above deadlines, please make clear the reason for the delay with your appeal application so the awarding bodies will take this into account when deciding whether or not it can be accepted for investigation.

  1. Download and fill in the application for an appeal form in the JCQ Appeals booklet.
  2. Tick ‘Preliminary stage’ and select the type of appeal you’re making.
  3. Explain why you’re appealing as clearly as possible. You need to reference either which specific regulation you consider has not been complied with, or why you consider that a mark is unreasonable. You can scan specific examples (for example from a script) and add commentary explaining your point of view. This will help us to focus more precisely on the issue, or issues, that you wish to raise.
  4. Sign the completed form.
  5. Email a scan of the form to exams@greatfieldsschool.com

If your appeal goes ahead, we’ll confirm this with you via email. When we receive an outcome, we will email this to you.

Application investigation and review by the awarding bodies can take up to 6 weeks.

Stage 2: appeal hearing

You can request an appeal hearing if you’ve received the outcome of a preliminary appeal and you’re not happy with it. You need to submit your appeal hearing application within 14 days of receiving the preliminary stage outcome to exams@greatfieldsschool.com.

  1. Download and fill in the application for an appeal form in the JCQ Appeals booklet.
  2. Tick ‘Appeal hearing’ and select the type of appeal you’re making.
  3. Explain the grounds upon which you are continuing your appeal as clearly as possible.
  4. Sign the completed form.
  5. Email a scan of the form to exams@greatfieldsschool.com

The appeal will be heard by an appeal panel which will include one independent member. We may contact you prior to the hearing date with information about the arrangements.

If you’re still unhappy with the outcome, you can make a further appeal to the Examination Procedure Review Service through Ofqual’s website.
