He spoke about The Holocaust, Amnesty International and the Human Rights Act.

Dan explained how the Human Rights were adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations on 10th December 1948, they were motivated by the horrors of the preceding world wars and it was the first time that countries agreed on a comprehensive statement of human rights. Dan discussed the 30 rights and freedoms, including the right to asylum, the right to freedom from torture, the right to free speech and the right to education. He showed the pupils examples of how individuals across the world have had and continue to have their basic rights violated. Dan went on to explain that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) are fundamental to Amnesty International, it is these that are the basis for most of their campaigning and helps them hold authorities to account when rights are abused. Pupils were given time to reflect upon how Human Rights are abused across the world and what Amnesty International does in order to protect those effected.

Some of the examples Dan shared with the pupils included:

Helen Berhane a Christian Gospel singer in Eritrea, who was arrested in 2004 shortly after releasing an album of Christian music. Amnesty International campaigned for the release of Helen and others persecuted for their religious beliefs.

Kim Dae Jung former South Korean President who was arrested and given the death sentence for his campaigns for human rights in South Korea. The pupils learnt about how Peter Benson, former British lawyer founded Amnesty International in 1961. The organisation continues to campaign through letters written by its members to government officials across the world.

It was an emotive and thought provoking assembly and we would like to thank Dan for coming in and sharing his experiences with our pupils.
