Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has launched a new competition inviting all 32 London boroughs to bid to become the Borough of Culture in 2019. The winner will receive \u00a31.1 million which will bring much needed resources to community led organisations, this will create life changing activities on offer for members of the community and not to mention schools within the winning borough; art classes and theatre and live music opportunities will then have the financial support needed to run.<\/div>\n
On Friday 17th November pupils from Greatfields school’s Art Club and School Council took part in Barking and Dagenham Council’s launch to be Borough of Culture at the Town Square. They were joined by pupils from other schools in the borough, members of the public, Studio 3 Arts, councillors including Cllr Darren Rodwell and the Mayor Cllr Eileen Keller. Cllr Darren Rodwell commented saying “The time is right for Barking and Dagenham to make a commitment to the role of culture in every aspect of life in the borough. The London Borough of Culture will help us achieve this role… Culture helps our economy by creating jobs and supporting young people to realise their potential. It strengthens the distinctive identity of our borough.”<\/div>\n
The launch saw Greatfields pupils take part in dances, back the bid launch chants and a\u00a0celebration of the borough’s dynamic community of culture. Pupils held up their banners made during art club with slogans promoting art and culture. Some of our pupils were lucky enough to be called to the stand during Cllr Eileen Kellers speech and were filmed in support of Barking and Dagenham’s launch for the bid! We back the bid and hope the our borough will win! #BackBD<\/div>\n
