On Thursday 14 September 20 pupils from Year 8 were selected to attend a careers workshop hosted by Jewellery designer Monica Bortolin- Cossa.\u00a0Monica spoke to the pupils about how she became a jewellery designer and how she established her own business in Hatton Garden, London\u2019s Jewellery quarter. She gave the pupils an insight into what a day is like in the life of a jewellery designer and explained the necessary skills and qualifications needed to get into the industry. The pupils were able to view some of Monica\u2019s \u00a0hand drawn designs and learnt about how a designer is required to meet with clients, discuss their needs and translate this using creative skills into an illustrated design to be used by manufacturing workshops. Pupils then took part in a design competition in which they created drawings of jewellery for a specific member of their family or a friend. The competition allowed them to explore the concept of meaning behind a design and the necessity for a designer to personalise their creations. Three designs were selected and each won a prize of luxury biscuits from Monica. The winners were Rebekah Hill, Nameera Chittiwala and Zainab Zainul. They were chosen for their technical drawing skills, the personalised meaning behind their design and their ability to illustrate design specifications within their drawing. Monica noted how impressed she was with all of the pupils\u2019 understanding of how to develop an individualised design and how to communicate this with one another.<\/span><\/p>\n
