A visit to one of the oldest markets in the UK selling foods from around the world. This trip\u00a0was organised\u00a0for YR10 (Hospitality & Catering) to allow them to taste test a range of cultural foods and inspire them for their coursework.<\/div>\n

To start the tour we walked to the site of Truman’s Brewery which dates back\u00a0to medieval times where we visited and listened to Nyanga’s story. A refugee from Africa who started with a small stall in the area and now owns a string of shops. The students looked at a huge array of chocolate\u00a0truffles (made in-house)\u00a0and tasted a couple and analysed!<\/div>\n

A walk to one of the first Bangladeshi delis in\u00a0the area that dates back to 1979. Students chose from many handmade snacks such as: fresh pakora,\u00a0paneer roll, bhaji,\u00a0samosa,\u00a0and much more. Down to Brick Lane to pick up salted beef or salmon\u00a0and cream cheese bagels from the very famous Beigel Bake, one of the oldest still family run Jewish bakeries\u00a0in London.<\/div>\n

Than onto a special little doughnutry on Brick Lane to choose from an array of gourmet doughnuts.\u00a0These were made with gluten free flour and were dairy free, but still delicious topped with fresh fruit, seasonal berries! We ate them on a site which was London’s worst slum areas, where the average age of death was 16yrs finished with Bubble tea originating from Taiwan consisting of sweetened tapioca balls fruit\u00a0or vegetable mix. This fashionable drink was what most of the students were looking to try and it was\u00a0a huge hit with everyone.<\/div>\n

This was the feedback from the tour guide, \u2018I was very impressed with the students’ concentration and fantastic energy so please do pass\u00a0on my praise to them if you can’. Also, I would like to say to my students, ‘Well done YR10 H&C students’.<\/div>\n
